The buttstock and forearm (also called the forend) are the wooden or synthetic furniture pieces that make up the exterior grip surfaces of a firearm. The buttstock mounts to the rear of the receiver and provides the shoulder contact point for aiming and recoil management. The forearm wraps around the barrel or action tube forward of the receiver, providing a grip surface and, in pump-actions, serving as the pump handle. Original Winchester stocks were crafted from American walnut with varying grades of figure and checkering patterns depending on the model and era.
